PERSONALIZED CAREER EXPLORATION
PATHWAYS… Helping people discover their perfect career
Pathways is a powerful career exploration tool that analyzes skills and work preferences to help users identify occupations where they are most likely to succeed. It generates a personalized, rank-ordered list of approximately 300 occupations, with those that most closely match a user’s skills and interests appearing at the top.
The list updates each time an assessment is completed or the work preferences survey is updated. This ensures clients receive up-to-date, personalized career recommendations that evolve with each new assessment or change in preferences, making results more accurate, relevant, and aligned with their goals.
In today’s rapidly changing job market, this innovative system delivers what both individuals and employers need: a scalable, cost-effective, and personalized approach to career matching.
How It Works
1. Skill Match: Pathways compares test results in each assessment area to the skill requirements of 298 occupations. It calculates the “gap” between a user’s scores and the typical skill levels needed for each job. These gaps are normalized to allow fair comparisons across all occupations. Careers with the smallest skill gaps, and therefore the strongest matches, appear higher on the list.
2. Interest Match: A brief survey captures the individual’s preferences related to work environments, tasks, and general interests. These include things like working with people, data, or tools; preferences for structure or flexibility; and interest in hands-on vs. analytical tasks. The responses are then compared to occupational data from the Government of Canada’s OaSIS system, which outlines the typical interest and workstyle attributes associated with each of 298 occupations. Occupations that more closely reflect an individual’s preferences receive higher interest match scores.
How the personalized rank-ordered list of occupations is generated
Pathways creates a personalized, rank-ordered list of 298 career options by combining assessment results and personal preferences using a 60/40 weighting model. Behind the scenes, tens of thousands of calculations compare the individual’s skill scores and interest patterns to the unique requirements of each occupation. Each career is then scored and ranked based on how well it aligns with both current capabilities and personal preferences. This balanced and data-driven approach helps people identify careers where they are not only qualified but also more likely to succeed and feel fulfilled.
For each of the 298 occupations on the list, Pathways provides:
- A plain-language job description
- A link to the Government of Canada’s OaSIS website, with detailed information on job duties, requirements, and interest alignment
- A link to the Government of Canada’s Job Bank, where wage information, job outlooks, and current openings both nationally and by province are presented.
